Wool

WOOL

Description

Wool is a natural and complex fibre which has many features that make it ideal as a carpet fibre due to it’s unique design. It is a versatile, safe and practical fibre that has been woven for clothes and furnishings for 25,000 years. It is a soft, comfortable, strong and naturally resilient fibre that requires very little in the way of added treatments to make it suitable as a carpet fibre.

As a carpet fibre it is unparalleled for quality and beauty and wool carpets are still regarded as the finest quality carpets made today. Almost all Australian wool carpets are made from New Zealand wool as it is a more stable fibre for carpet than Australian Wool.

Australian wool is of fine quality making it ideal for clothing but too soft for carpets, although there are now some strands of Australian Wool that are being developed for use in carpets.
Despite advances made in man-made carpet fibres, wool maintains its reputation as a fibre of choice for long-term appearance retention, beauty and prestige.

Summary of Advantages

Excellent carpet fibre for humid climates as the wool will absorb some of the moisture from the air, releasing it as the climate dries out.
Extremely fire resistant.
Natural anti static properties as water conducts electricity away from the surface of the carpet, meaning less effective when the room climate is dry as there is less moisture in the carpet.
Accepts dyes readily providing excellent colour depth to the core of the fibre. Wool can also be dyed any colour.

Summary of Disadvantages

Will absorb liquid stains if allowed to penetrate the fibre.
Can become susceptible to mildew if not properly dried after becoming wet.
Can be affected by wool moth if not correctly managed.

SYNTHETIC

Solution Dyed Nylon

There are a number of other factors that impact on how well nylon performs as a carpet fibre. Some of these are Solution Dyed Nylon and the type of filament being used.

Rather than being dyed after the fibre is formed, nylon can be dyed as it is extruded which is how the nylon polymer becomes a fibre. During this extrusion process when the nylon is melted, dye is added and therefore, the colour becomes part of the fibre and not something added to it after it has been made.

Solution Dyed Nylon has outstanding resistance to discolouration by sunlight and chemicals.

Summary of Advantages

Extremely resistant to fading from sunlight and bleaching from chemical cleaners.
Will retain its colour for life.
There will never be any colour variation across the carpet, as can happen with other dyeing processes.

Summary of Disadvantages

Most costly to produce.
Less colour choices available as the coloured fibres have to be stock piled, adding to the production costs.
Manufacturers therefore limit the number of colours of solution dyed nylon they produce.

They are formed from an upper layer of pile attached to a backing and are produced in a variety of sizes, materials, fibres, patterns and colours. Carpet tiles are often used in commercial and public buildings such as airports, offices, schools, libraries, and so on. Carpet tiles are manufactured in both non-adhesive (require gluing) and adhesive (peel-and-stick) styles.

When choosing tiles, it is important to consider the overall design scheme and the requirements of the finished floor, as well as the size and durability of the tiles required.
